DAB digital Radio aerials

DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting. To listen to it, you will need a DAB digital radio. You can pick up any digital stations with an ordinary or traditional FM / AM radio.

You should be able to pick up the DAB transmission from an internal aerial. However, in some cases you may get a 'bubbling' noise or 'white' noise from an internal aerial.

Troubleshooting digital radio reception

Make sure the aerial on your radio is fully extended. Digital transmission is not like an ordinary transmission (FM/AM), therefore if the reception is poor, you won't get any reception at all for particular stations. Try putting your hand on the aerial itself. This will use your body as a signal booster. If you can receive reception that way, you may need an external digital aerial or you might be able to get reception if you purchase an aerial signal booster. This is a device that plugs into your mains supply to boost the radio signal.

It might be that you live in a built-up area. This will reduce the strength of the signal. Also, if your radio is in a basement, inside a well insulated building or a building made of re-inforced concrete, the signal strength will be reduced. Placing the radio near a window might help, and probably having the radio upstairs as oppose to downstairs will help.

Installing an external digital aerial

Most DAB radios will take an external aerial. You just need to unscrew the fixed aerial and attach the cable from the external aerial in its place. Our engineer can show you how to do this.

DAB Digital aerials are different from an ordinary FM/AM or even a TV aerial. An external or outdoor aerial will give you the best digital reception. This should ideally be fixed onto the roof or high up on the outside of a building. It is possible to install digital aerial into the loft. Our engineer can give you advice where necessary.
